INTERSECTION: WORLD CULTURE IN THE EAST BAY 2012We've announced the winners of our second juried online arts exhibition, Intersection: World Culture in the East Bay! We received many great submittals for this year's competition. Every entry is worth your time to view and all are posted on the website. This body of work reflects the past year in the nation and in the East Bay. Throughout time, artists have responded to political events, and this exhibition is reflective of our times. It is a strong collective statement from this year's artists. In the work we saw a lot of self-reflection as well -- people looking at themselves and at the East Bay to reflect the turmoil in today's world. Commingling cultural stories was a bottom-line theme throughout everyone's work -- how East Bay is that? The stories are being told simultaneously and together, in collaboration. As an example, Deborah Oropallo's images in this collection signify something that existed as a political statement, with the artist noticing it through her images as a piece of extant public art. The energy and the diversity of the East Bay are unique. Sometimes, living here, we take that for granted. The arts can open a window into a finer-grain reality of living and working in the East Bay. The expressions of art you see here help combat all-too-prevalent negative perceptions. This year's winners exemplify the richness and wonders all around us, and remind us why we remain committed to the arts in the East Bay. Launch the Exhibition |
